⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Nigel Uno (Numbah 1)
Age: 11
Canon: Codename: Kids Next Door
Canon Point: The end of Operation: ZERO

Background: C:KND overview @ Wikipedia, C:KND episode list @ Wikipedia

Nigel is the only son of Monty Uno and his wife. When he was three years old, his family moved to the US. He befriended Hoagie Gilligan Jr in kindergarten.

Eventually he would be recruited into the Kids Next Door. A secret paramilitary organization, run by children between approximately 8-12 years old, dedicated to protecting the children of the world from "adult tyranny."

During his time as a cadet he was involved in a mission that ended up going south. His friend, and fellow KND operative, Abby Lincoln, failed to rescue him from the Delightful Children from Down the Lane after they had captured him, and they did something to Nigel that resulted in him going prematurely bald before he was ten years old.

After graduating to full KND operative status, Nigel became the leader of Sector V, a KND sector made up of his friends, the aforementioned Hoagie and Abby, alongside Kuki Sanban and Wally Beetles, and together they would go on routine KND missions.

Sometimes, though, they weren't very routine. Sector V had a knack for getting involved with the particularly unusual plots, the ones that often had global repercussions for the KND. Foiling the plans of the biggest villains in the KND's rogue gallery, uncovering secret plots that even the higher ups in the organization overlooked. It was, perhaps, because Nigel led these missions that he was considered one of the best, if not the best, operatives in the KND.

One of his most notable adventures was the day Grandfather, the original nemesis of the KND returned. He was like nothing the KND had faced before. Grandfather had the power to turn everyone into "Senior Citizombies", elderly minions that he could use to take over the world. Grandfather was turning the whole world into his minions, kid, teenager and adult alike. Nigel, one of the last people affected by the infection, and, in his desperation to save everyone, decides to track down the mysterious "Numbah 0", the founder of the current iteration of the KND, and an operative believed to be just a legend, to help fight Grandfather.

It turned out though that Numbah 0 wasn't just real, Numbah 0 was Nigel's own father. Nigel recommissions him, and they hatch a plan to defeat Grandfather. Nigel also discovers the "Book of KND", another "legend" and the book that inspired Monty to fight Grandfather when he was Nigel's age.

With help, Nigel heads to the Moonbase, (But not before learning some interesting things about his family tree first, like how Grandfather was, in fact, his biological grandfather.) while Nigel's father stays behind on Earth to fend off Grandfather.

It turns out, the plan was to literally drop the Moonbase onto Grandfather on Earth, trapping him in the Decommisioning module, a device used to erase memories, turning him back into a feeble old man, reversing the infection and saving everyone on the planet. Unfortunately, Numbah 0's memories are erased as well, turning him back into Nigel's dopey father.

Nigel tries to recommission him, but it fails, and he discovers a message from his dad from before the Moonbase landed, telling him it was for the best, since that meant he could now focus on being the best father he could be for Nigel and giving him the Book of KND to watch over.

And that's where we'll be picking up with him in Empathies....

Personality:

Mature, intelligent and a born leader, Nigel's a kid who just simply doesn't act his age most of the time, acting more grown up than most of the grown ups he knows. Nigel seems like a kid who was forced to grow up way too fast, and it likely stems from the failed mission he and Numbah 5 were on early in his KND career. He learned the hard way that KND missions weren't games, and he took that heart. Far too close to heart, in fact. It can make him seem almost hypocritical at times. A boy dedicated to giving kids the world over a chance to enjoy a carefree childhood, but his own childhood is anything but carefree.

Nigel is an extreme workaholic, who takes his job as the commanding officer of his KND sector very seriously. Too seriously. Most adults don’t take their jobs as seriously as Nigel takes his. At any given moment, he’d much rather go on an operation with his friends, or be otherwise caught up in “official” KND business, than get involved in any sort of activity he perceives as frivolous or pointless. He’s the sort to claim that he hasn’t got the time to play games or goof off when there’s actual work to be done, or when there’s a possibility for work to come up. Since no one should be that much of a workaholic, least of all a pre-teen boy, he’s often forced by his friends to take the breaks and vacations he stubbornly refuses to take on his own.

He also comes across as paranoid and something of a conspiracy theorist. He’ll often seem to chase after wild, imagined instances of evil plots and adult tyranny where there are none. However, despite the fact that his theories seem to just be the product of Nigel’s imagination running away from him, his theories and assumptions often turn out to be absolutely correct, and when they’re not correct, the reason he’s wrong is usually because the truth of the matter is so utterly absurd that no one, not even Nigel, could see something like it coming.

Nigel's not the sort of person who trusts easily. Being a member of the KND, he doesn't trust adults, or teenagers, by default. He does know there's such a thing as someone over the age of 13 who's not evil, and possibly even trustworthy, but it's easier, safer, to not trust them by default. Especially since there have been cases of kids trusting adults and teenagers only for it to blow up in their faces. Of course, even being his age, or being a fellow KND operative isn't a guarantee he'll trust you, it'll make it easier for him to trust you, sure, but not a guarantee. That said, once you gain his trust and get past his walls

Nigel may be an uptight stick in the mud, but he’ll also be one of the best friends you could have. He’s not just the commanding officer of his sector, and the other operatives aren’t just his subordinates. They’re his friends, and he's extremely loyal to his friends. He may be dedicated to his job, but when push comes to shove, he's not going to be beholden to the KND's rules if said rules make it hard to do the right thing, or, perhaps more importantly, when following the rules would hurt his friends (figuratively or literally).

As precocious as Nigel is, there are times where the expected immaturity of an eleven year old boy manages to find a way to slip past Nigel’s controlled and professional front, betraying the fact that he’s still just a child, at the end of the day. He's not above getting into a childish argument with a friend, or becoming an inarticulate mess when trying to process something cool, surprising or shocking that happened. He can also be naive about more grown up topics, for example, he had no idea why babies would be in a hospital nursery, even though most kids his age would have some inkling as to why. He also has a fairly short temper, and a lack of patience, and will fly off the handle if someone is being annoying, or frustrating him to no end.

He also still has a normal child's wants and needs, even if those wants and needs are sometimes filtered through the weirdness of the KND. And like any child, he's easily embarrassed by his parents. Though, despite what being a KND  officer may imply about the matter, Nigel's actually a good, mostly well behaved kid that genuinely loves his parents (even before he learned of his father's origins).

Ultimately, Nigel's a precocious kid with a good heart, even if does come across as overly serious.

Abilities: Nigel is a highly trained KND operative, often said to be one of the best. As to what that entails, it means Nigel knows both hand to hand combat and how to use the “2x4 technology” weapons provided to him by the organization. (2x4 tech being tech that is literally cobbled together from household objects.) While Nigel may not be his sector’s pilot, every KND operative at least knows how to operate the vehicles used by the organization. (He already know how to drive a car and KND transportation is typically way more complicated than that) As the commanding officer of his sector, Nigel is an excellent leader. (Especially since leading a KND sector, his in particular, is a bit like herding cats.)

Alignment: Piphron. Nigel doesn't trust easily, he especially doesn’t trust most adults or teenagers, but when someone does manage to earn his trust, it's a trust that runs very deep.

Other: He'll have a basic KND communicator, the mustard bottle gun and the Book of KND on him. Said gun likely uses condiments as it's ammo, so he shouldn't have trouble refilling it.

⌈ SAMPLE SECTION ⌉

General Sample: Here!

Emotion Sample:

This is Numbah 1 of Sector V, calling Kids Next Door Moonbase. I repeat, come in Moonbase!

[Nothing.

Still nothing.

Nothing from his team, nothing from Moonbase, not even static, he was just met with a blank screen. He tossed the communicator aside in frustration.]

This is impossible, millions of kids don’t just disappear into thin air!

[Nigel just wasn’t ready to accept that the KND simply didn’t exist here. The KND was far reaching, absurdly far reaching, so there had to be something, even if it wasn’t strictly the organization he knew back home there had to be something--

The communicator suddenly beeped, taking him out of his thoughts with a start. He scrambled to where he had tossed it, the room literally brightening with his excitement and anticipation… only for it to drain away as fast at it had appeared.

Still nothing but a blank screen, the beeping hadn’t been an incoming call, it was simply a low power warning. Nigel was just so desperate from any sort of feedback from the communicator that a single beep had been enough for him to convince himself that it was an incoming call.]
